HMPV virus surges in China. China is reportedly witnessing a surge in human metapneumovirus (HMPV) cases, sparking concerns of another health crisis after COVID-19 pandemic. HMPV causes flu-like symptoms and can lead to severe respiratory issues, especially among children and vulnerable groups. Yong children, older adults and those with weakened immune systems are at higher risk of developing severe illness due to HMPV.

Reports suggest that China is dealing with another epidemic five years after the outbreak of deadly Covid-19 pandemic, which triggered prolonged lockdowns and saw millions of deaths.
What is HMPV virus seeing surge in China?
Discovered in 2001, HMPV belongs to the Pneumoviridae family, the same family as respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). According to US Centers for Diseases Control and Prevention (CDC). It typically causes upper and lower respiratory infections, presenting symptoms similar to a common cold or flu.

Symptoms commonly associated with HMPV, as noted by the CDC, include, cough and runny or stuffy nose, fever, sore throat, wheezing or shortness of breath in severe case. In some cases, the infections can escalate to bronchitis, pneumonia or asthma exacerbations.
How does HMPV spread?
HMPV spreads through droplets from coughing or sneezing, close contact such as touching or shaking hands, contaminated surfaces, followed by touching the mouth, nose, or eyes. As per the CDC, HMPV has a seasonal pattern, circulating in late winter and spring in temperate regions. It also spread for instance, Coughing and sneezing, shaking hands, hugging or kissing.
