The meeting focused on the Indo-Pacific “Quad”. A group seen by many as a counter measure to China’s growing assertiveness in the region. A concern raised by both President Trump and previous US leaders.
Despite the significance of the gathering, none of the foreign ministers, including Rubio, Australia’s Penny Wong, India’s S. Jaishankar, and Japan’s Iwaya Takeshi, spoke at the start of the meeting. Instead, they stood silently before their respective national flags as journalists were asked to leave.
Donald Trump said he would likely impose sanctions on Russia if its president Vladimir Putin, refuses to negotiate about ending the war in Ukraine.
